Regional Differences in the Occurrence of Cancers on Biliary System in Korea: A descriptive epidemiological study
Bae Jong-Myon

Abstract
Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the regional age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) in
cancer on biliary system nationwide in Korea in order to suggest some hypotheses for evaluating potential risk factors while the Korean men have the highest ASIR of gallbladder and extra-hepatic ducts cancers in the world.

Methods: Author collected the ASIRs in intra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) (ICD-10, C22.1), extra-hepatic
CCA (C24), and gallbladder cancer (C23) by sex and 16 regions in Korea between 1999 and 2005.

Results: When the ASIRs were sorted descending, author found that a region having higher ASIR in one cancer site on biliary system have higher ASIR in the other sites. And the distribution of regional sex ratio in ASIRs was so different.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, author suggested 3 hypotheses for establishing potential risk
factors between regions showing the highest and the lowest ASIR and recommended to confirm the accuracy and reliability of coding system in cancer registry.
